Deca-Dence 2020
Deca-Dence 2020 Storyline:
The series is the newest big release in the post-apocalyptic anime genre, with the characters living in a world four centuries in the future. The series has commentary on climate change, pollution, and the ever-popular topic of cyborgs and robots in anime about the future. It is set in the late 2400s, and air pollution has reached a level that is actually lethal to humans who breathe it. It is set in the late 2400s, and air pollution has reached a level that is actually lethal to humans who breathe it.
Most everyone lives in a fortress city called Deca-Dence 2020, which was built under a giant dome that protects humans from pollution on the rest of the planet. The city is essentially a big entertainment facility with its own government, with tasks carried out mostly by cyborgs. Outside of the domed city are creatures called Gadoll, which have contributed to much of the destruction of humanity.
The few survivors band together to build a mobile fortress known as Deca-Dence 2020, from which they can mount their resistance to the enemy. Natsume has wanted to be a soldier since she was a child, but she is instead sent to work under the apathetic armorer Kaburagi. One day, however, they become embroiled in a battle with the Gadoll while working, and Natsume witnesses Kaburagi take down one Gadoll after another.
Director Yuzuru Tachikawa and producer Takuya Tsunoki worked together on a Madhouse anime, Death Parade. The two enjoyed working together and collaborating, and they wanted to try their hand at creating something original together. From that came the idea to do Deca-Dence 2020.
They wanted to create a series Deca-Dence 2020 featuring humans fighting against monsters. But they also didn’t want it to just be about that, and so they set out to give it a more interesting setting, focusing specifically on the concept of the world being a construct, created by somebody or something and operated as a corporation by the people who created it.

Natsume (ナツメ)
Natsume is one of the main protagonists in Deca-Dence 2020. Natsume is a young girl with short ginger hair and blue eyes. She is cheerful, energetic, determined, and reckless. She likes to look on the bright side, and never gives up on her dreams.
Her normal outfit consists of a short-sleeved white shirt, green pants with a yellow belt, and brown open-toed sandals. She has had a prosthetic right arm since she lost her real arm as a child.
She lost her father and her right arm after a Gadoll attack when she was a child. She dreams of joining The Power and fighting the Gadoll as a warrior. However, the powers that be doubt her abilities, and she ends up working under Kaburagi as a sanitation worker and armor repairer.
Kaburagi (カブラギ)
Kaburagi is one of the main protagonists in Deca-Dence 2020.
Kaburagi is quiet and cold when you first meet him, but is very kind-hearted and caring underneath. He is impulsive and does not often make plans, preferring to jump right into the action. He has a strong moral compass and often makes the right choice guided by a gut feeling.
Kaburagi is very protective of Natsume, and eventually of all the Tankers, and is determined to fight for them no matter the cost. A veteran armor repairer, he is blunt, surly, and kindhearted.
He was once a great warrior, but years of punishment from the Power have broken his spirit and he spends his days apathetically. However, his state of mind starts to change through his encounter with Natsume, who never gives up on her dreams.
Kaburagi as a Human Avatar in Deca-Dence 2020
Kaburagi is a middle-aged man sporting greying black hair, which he slicks back, and facial hair on his chin. He wears a tucked-in wide-necked short-sleeved shirt (with the sleeves tucked up and buttoned) with two buttons on the front. He wears olive wide pants and is tucked into brown boots. He has a black belt tied and a leather bracelet on his wrist.
Kaburagi as a Cyborg Form in Deca-Dence 2020
In his cyborg form, Kaburagi is very short and cylindrical. He has a rectangular faceplate, and a brown and mint-green color scheme. He wears a red jet pack on his back. He also has brown spikes coming off his head, giving the appearance of spikey hair.
Natsume and Kaburagi in Deca-Dence 2020:
Why does Kaburagi Care about Natsume?
It has everything to do with what she symbolizes as a person – a spirit of free thought, self-determination, bravery under fire in combat, resilience, dutiful work ethic, self-sacrifice, and resistance to a system which seems preordained and refusal to acquiesce to the bred and ingrained pessimism and fatalism of the system’s other subjects. I imagine to Kaburagi most of the other cyborgs and conditioned humans seem like totally dead inside dispirited slaves.
He doesn’t agree with the system or its aims so at first, he was just using her as a proxy to see how far someone else who refused to bow down in spite of their programming could fight back and push the system. Maybe just for cynical entertainment at first without any real hope or expectation behind it. And then he vicariously began experiencing a sense of hope and possibility.
There are minor indications of liking her as a person apart from that, as a friend or teammate and possibly in a paternal way – he wants to protect her selfless innocence and naivete since he knows well she doesn’t have the full picture of the extent of what she’s up against. But what’s portrayed in the progression of the series seems to suggest those feelings developed more recently. He first came to respect her as a person for what she represented and only after that developed more personal attachments.
The series is necessarily violent, considering that it’s specifically about humans fighting monsters that have decimated the human population. But the creators didn’t want Deca-Dence 2020 to be an over-the-top violent anime. For that reason, they avoided making anything look too violent and instead went for something a little bit cuter, even with regard to the Gadoll, which are responsible for a lot of bloodsheds.
They were originally designed to look more like spiders and dragons, but they dialed it back to make them into something cute but also horrible-looking. The idea was to create them to look like something the cute cyborgs might create.
Like most good stories, the relationships between the main characters are almost more important than anything that’s actually happening in the world around them. The relationship between Natsume and Kaburagi, a former warrior who now repairs armor, is at the heart of the story and is the most important part of the narrative.

Alright, this is my favorite anime of all time, obviously, a big statement to start a review with. I obviously don’t expect anyone else to think so highly of the series, but I genuinely do think it is a masterpiece. I also don’t like breaking anime down by how MAL does reviews numerically, but eh I’ll give it a go.
Story: 10
This is a fast-paced anime, it’s a 12 episode original. Keep that in mind, personally, I think the pacing is well done. Every episode has its own direction in terms of what it wants to do if that makes sense, but it’s still under one story. The story itself looks simple during the first episode, but all I’ll say is that there’s A LOT more to it.
Art: 8
I’m not gonna act like it’s some Ufotable or Bones stuff because it’s not, but the art is still well-done. There are basically two main distinct art styles in Deca-Dence 2020, and it throws some people off, think of Mob Psycho 100 or Masaaki Yuasa works. But the animation itself is pretty damn well done, has really great aerial combat(this is from the same studio who made Tanya the Evil for context), and transitions between the two styles damn well. The directing is also fantastic; episodes 5, 8, and 10 stand out a ton in this regard.
Sound: 10
I don’t like talking about something as obviously subjective as music/sound in an analytical sense, but I’ll say that the soundtrack was awesome and used very well, with many memorable tracks(especially the ED wowie). Voice acting was on point, and sound effects were well done. I don’t have any flaws with it, fantastic job. Also, Koyasu Takehito has a big role in doing what he does best, sounding evil. Can’t go wrong with that.
Character: 10
Our two main characters of Natsume and Kaburagi are FANTASTIC and definitely carry in this department. They have a wonderful relationship that I can best describe as a shared inspiration. Both of our characters develop tons both due to each other and their general environment, and it feels very genuine.
Enjoyment: 11
I seriously still can’t believe how much this anime appealed to me. Obviously, the enjoyment rating can vary person by person, as can honestly any of the other ratings. I’ve literally cried just from thinking of how much I love this anime, on more occasions than I can count. Episodes 5, 7, and 10 are literally my three favorite Deca-Dence 2020 episodes of all time.

It’s rare to get a good original anime these days. Most of what gets made are Light Novel and manga adaptations. Yet, Deca-Dence 2020 managed to arrive out of nowhere and give us 12 weeks of greatness. Unfortunately, it was always going to be difficult to compete with Re: Zero airing at the same time and on the same day, but for those of us who did get a chance to view the show, we saw something special.
From the same studio that brought us Youjo Senki, Deca-Dence 2020 is unlike anything I’ve personally ever seen, and the closest I could compare it to plot-wise would be Guren Lagann mixed with Mortal Engines, Shingeki no Kyojin, and MMORPG elements. It’s a world where humanity must overcome impossible odds to survive and is an enjoyable watch that blends unique characters with a rich and lively sci-fi world.
As you’d expect from studio NUT, the animation, art, and quality are all top-notch. My only complaint in that department would be the CG at the end of the series, particularly the final fight, which I found to be pretty bad. Other than that, actions sequences, OST’s and character models are consistently good.
Lastly, the show also manages to break the anime original curse by having a solid ending that is consistent with the themes presented throughout. So often anime original shows will have a great start and fall off at the end. Not this time.
Deca-Dence 2020 has definitely been one of the best shows of the year and it’s a shame it was overshadowed due to its release time and date, but I can assure you it is worth a watch and will probably not disappoint you. Deca-Dence 2020 gets 8 gears out of 10 from me.
Sigh. I wonder why this show is so underrated. Maybe it’s lacking in surface appeal, or what I love most about it is not what people often appreciate most… regardless.
I had to review this show after the sixth episode though I thought to do it beforehand. This show has an exceptionally rich story imo. There are so many co-relations with our world, with the ways things are, with the future.
